Domestic violence spotlighted following apparent murder-suicide in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - Family members of Cheri Bland, the woman who was murdered inside the 7th Heaven shop on Sunday, believe Bland's ex-boyfriend pulled the trigger.

Kansas City police have not released the name of the shooter, but the family tells KCTV5 it was Bland's ex-boyfriend who shot and killed her. He later took his own life.

They added the shooter was the father of a 10-month-old girl and Bland had just taken out a restraining order against him.

Mary Anne Metheny, the chief executive officer of the Hope House, says there are warning signs of domestic violence.

However, it's not always the obvious injuries.

"Hearing conversations that happened between a couple that make you feel uncomfortable - very controlling behavior - somebody not being allowed to make their own decisions," Metheny said. "Not being allowed to come and go as they please, having their clothing monitored and their spending monitored. That controlling piece is really what domestic violence is about."

Bland's family spoke with KCTV5 News on Monday. They said they are awaiting autopsy results and will soon start planning her funeral.

All five of Bland's girls are with her family.
