Kate's Story

Kate* has been in Hope House services since 2004. She has been in and out of shelter seven times; each time returning to a home with domestic violence and substance abuse. She successfully completed our shelter program in 2009 and has been coming to outreach services ever since.

Kate was finally successful because she truly engaged in therapy and group meetings (rather than sitting back and wondering when the meeting would be over), and really worked at changing her life. She now has her first ever apartment. Hope House provided her with just about everything she needed or supplied supportive services through other collaborative programs to get her set up.

This year she celebrated her first holidays in her own apartment where she cooked for her children, who had been removed from her care long ago due to the violence and substance abuse in the home. Kate shared this story with the support group she attends, which was huge because she was assuming the responsibility for making a change in her life.

Hearing a story like this gave the other womenin the support group hope. And it is one of the many reasons that everyone at Hope House works so hard: to see and experience success for those who had lost all hope.
